My Smart Hands with Dawna

Sign Language classes for hearing babies and toddlers

Dawna was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Having a flair for anything creative, she found herself working as a Designer and Lettering Artist for Hallmark Cards Canada. During her 31 years with Hallmark, Dawna discovered a love for American Sign Language. After taking several courses offered at Bob Rumball, The Centre for the Deaf in Toronto, and communicating daily with a deaf colleague through signing, Dawna and her husband became proud parents in 2007 and knew all along that they would be teaching their daughter ASL. “Even with my knowledge of ASL, I was still amazed at how quickly we were able to communicate with our daughter and her back to us.”

As happens with many companies, Hallmark went through a major restructuring and the Design Department that Dawna worked in was eliminated. “I spent the next two summers with my daughter, camping, cottaging and going to friends trailers. I wouldn’t trade that time for anything in the world! When school is in, I’m very involved, co-leading a “Girls on The Run” training class after school hours (unfortunately that program is no longer available in Canada), sitting on the SCC, and am now a Lunch Room Supervisor in the JK/SK room.”

It didn’t take Dawna long to decide what she was meant to do in the next chapter of her life. Becoming a My Smart Hands instructor was such a natural transition for me. It combines my love for children with my passion for learning and sharing the beautiful language of ASL with others. I can’t tell you how excited I am to share signing with as many families as I can throughout parts of the Durham and York Regions. Please feel free to contact me for a class in your area.”
